Ergo Radius Solis et Umbra*

Green. Garish. Garnish. Garish Garnish.

Somehow, he didn’t think he was supposed to have met the man. At least, not ten minutes before meeting the other. Same. At least, not in a void of black and. And. And.

Spoilers. Spoiled for choice.

They were the same, yet not. The first, at least, was slightly more stable, as though the years had somehow degenerated his cells. He had become a nuclear reactor ready to take the Earth with it at the slightest provocation. Screaming all the way.

Losing what had been lost. Lost in the losing.

He had been there, once, tampered with his own radioactive decay. He was an isotope of himself and knew the feeling well.

“He was half the man I am, Ianto Jones.”

A reassurance. A jest.

“You grew up fast, then.”

A warning in retort.

“Oh, yes. But we were still alone. You?”

“Not anymore, no. Has he changed, since you first knew him?”

“Aside from not being able to die? Yes. And he will continue.”

“Spoilers?” A wink.

“You would read the end before the beginning.”

“Yes. Doesn’t mean I’d pay any attention to it.”

“Well. He loves you. Though how you could stand him…I have to send you back soon or he’ll do something stupid.”

“He loves you, too.”

A reassurance? An accusation. An avoidance.

“It’s different. He fancies himself a disciple and a god in his own right.”

“The whole resurrecting bit helps the image. But.” A pause. “I’m glad you grew up.”

A grin. “Not done yet. Neither are you, Ianto Jones. Someday.” A laugh. “Yan. He’s tricky. ‘You Are Not.’”

A jibe? A memory.

A pocket watch glinting in its arc. Thrown – him. Caught – watch.

“And this is how it has to be. For now.”

Flashes of light. Lit.

Caelum. Solis. Terra. Ignis. Stella. Aqua. Luna.

Tempus.

“Ianto? Ianto, you with us?” Worried. Worried and loving and hopeful and in charge.

In charge.

“Give him room, Harkness.”

“He’ll be okay?”

“Tosh, check the scanner. Gwen, go check the CCTV footage.”

“I said give him room!”

His world was bonding again, sight with sound, attracted by poles or polymers, from elements to magic.

Jack. His world turning on Jack’s axis, stuck and silent like the middle of an explosion where nothing moves except wave upon wave of heat.

Ianto Jones, archivist and administrator and sometimes-field-agent for Torchwood Three. Ianto Jones, archivist and administrator and sometimes-field-agent for Torchwood Three. Ianto Jones, archivist and administrator and sometimes-field-agent for Torchwood Three.

“He’s coming to.”

“Ianto?”

“Jack.”

A reassurance.

Like lips pressed to lips to the beat of one heart. Two hearts. Three hearts, because Jack’s beat, too.

Exploding like a nuclear warhead.

What was that about hearts? And why was he lying in the Archives?

Like tendrils of a dream. For now.

A reassurance. A jest. A warning. An accusation. An avoidance. A jibe. A memory. A promise. A whisper.

“HARKNESS! He can’t breathe if you keep snogging him!”

But he can.

Ooh. This was interesting. I had to read it twice to get it, but this is the kind of fic that I love. The ones that I have to puzzle over for a while.
LOVED IT. Thank you for sharing. :DDD

Thank you for reading it and TWICE! I just...I fell into the Timelord!Ianto trap. And I can't get out! :) I'm glad you enjoyed!

Took me a minute (or four or five) but I think I got it - Yan, Yana, etc. Very, very good, cerebral (and I think I need more caffeine to jog a sluggish mind).

[identity profile] sariagray.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
YAY! I know, it's really convoluted ("cerebral" is the polite term and I thank you for that lol). I doubt it's your mind...I think it may be mine, because it's currently almost bedtime over here. :)

I am really considering doing a Cliffnotes for this! lol

oh...

That was interesting! Took me a bit and I had to read it twice, but that's what made it so good! I love the style =)

also...

“HARKNESS! He can’t breathe if you keep snogging him!”

I'm glad you liked! To be honest, I had to write it about five times before it even started making sense to ME! I think I was possessed. :) Thanks!!

[identity profile] sariagray.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I make you cry. I have you falling off the couch. And now, I've killed you.

But I got a squee out of it, so I guess all is well. :) AND I didn't have to bribe you! haha :)

I'm so happy you like it! At least, I think you like it, but you're dead, so I can't tell!

ooh

Deep -- I like it!

Possibilities of more, perchance? Tantalizing bits left about the place, looking for a home....Coyly fluttering eyelashes....Any joy?
XOXOXO

Thank you! :) Not where I intended to go at all, but here I am all the same.

[identity profile] sariagray.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! :-D There might be, if I got repossessed by aliens. I'm thinking of a Doctor-perspective companion piece at some point that...explains more. As best as the Doctor can, anyway! Thanks! :)

Hmmm. I'll go with intriguing and I'll read it again when I don't have a headache and don't keep dozing off, because right now I'm not sure the alphabet would make sense to my brain!

I think I half followed, but I'm too tired to be sure. Perhaps better not to try to read anything that requires thought right now! 0_o

[identity profile] sariagray.livejournal.com 2010-11-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm working on a sort of very very short prequel that I may just eventually post; I don't want it to take away from this, but at the same time, people seem to be pleading for some explanations! :)

That said, I can't imagine this being easy to read while sleepy and with a headache. Feel better! :)

My 3-day migraine decided to throw in a fourth day free of charge, unfortunately on the day the plumber showed up to fit new taps in the bathroom (easy to use ones since mum and I both have arthritis), so despite the headache I had to shift stuff and dash up and down stairs, etc, etc. and it left me so exhausted, when I sat down to relax and read, I literally kept dozing off every few sentences, then waking up and not knowing where I'd got to. I'm heading to bed now I'm awake enough to manage it - I will read this again at some point though, when I can actually keep my eyes open long enough!

His world turning on Jack’s axis, stuck and silent like the middle of an explosion where nothing moves except wave upon wave of heat.

Loved that.

Very intriguing. Nicely done.

Makes more sense when I'm a bit more awake =)

Also, reading the other one helped my brain to adjust. I guess the Doctor understands now, though the memory seems to be slipping away from Ianto as he wakes - better that way, he's where he belongs, with Jack.

Time Lord but not - for now. Guess it's not time yet.

Still intriguing =)

Thank you! :)

And yay! You picked one of my favorite lines!! :bounce:

[identity profile] sariagray.livejournal.com 2010-11-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, you got it! :) My brain makes strange connections to things, and I've figured out that what makes sense to me makes sense to no one else! Haha

And not yet. Some day. ;-)
