Green. Garish. Garnish. Garish Garnish.
Somehow, he didn’t think he was supposed to have met the man. At least, not ten minutes before meeting the other. Same. At least, not in a void of black and. And. And.
Spoilers. Spoiled for choice.
They were the same, yet not. The first, at least, was slightly more stable, as though the years had somehow degenerated his cells. He had become a nuclear reactor ready to take the Earth with it at the slightest provocation. Screaming all the way.
Losing what had been lost. Lost in the losing.
He had been there, once, tampered with his own radioactive decay. He was an isotope of himself and knew the feeling well.
“He was half the man I am, Ianto Jones.”
A reassurance. A jest.
“You grew up fast, then.”
A warning in retort.
“Oh, yes. But we were still alone. You?”
“Not anymore, no. Has he changed, since you first knew him?”
“Aside from not being able to die? Yes. And he will continue.”
“Spoilers?” A wink.
“You would read the end before the beginning.”
“Yes. Doesn’t mean I’d pay any attention to it.”
“Well. He loves you. Though how you could stand him…I have to send you back soon or he’ll do something stupid.”
“He loves you, too.”
A reassurance? An accusation. An avoidance.
“It’s different. He fancies himself a disciple and a god in his own right.”
“The whole resurrecting bit helps the image. But.” A pause. “I’m glad you grew up.”
A grin. “Not done yet. Neither are you, Ianto Jones. Someday.” A laugh. “Yan. He’s tricky. ‘You Are Not.’”
A jibe? A memory.
A pocket watch glinting in its arc. Thrown – him. Caught – watch.
“And this is how it has to be. For now.”
Flashes of light. Lit.
Caelum. Solis. Terra. Ignis. Stella. Aqua. Luna.
Tempus.
“Ianto? Ianto, you with us?” Worried. Worried and loving and hopeful and in charge.
In charge.
“Give him room, Harkness.”
“He’ll be okay?”
“Tosh, check the scanner. Gwen, go check the CCTV footage.”
“I said give him room!”
His world was bonding again, sight with sound, attracted by poles or polymers, from elements to magic.
Jack. His world turning on Jack’s axis, stuck and silent like the middle of an explosion where nothing moves except wave upon wave of heat.
Ianto Jones, archivist and administrator and sometimes-field-agent for Torchwood Three. Ianto Jones, archivist and administrator and sometimes-field-agent for Torchwood Three. Ianto Jones, archivist and administrator and sometimes-field-agent for Torchwood Three.
“He’s coming to.”
“Ianto?”
“Jack.”
A reassurance.
Like lips pressed to lips to the beat of one heart. Two hearts. Three hearts, because Jack’s beat, too.
Exploding like a nuclear warhead.
What was that about hearts? And why was he lying in the Archives?
Like tendrils of a dream. For now.
A reassurance. A jest. A warning. An accusation. An avoidance. A jibe. A memory. A promise. A whisper.
“HARKNESS! He can’t breathe if you keep snogging him!”
But he can.

Date: 2010-11-16 11:21 pm (UTC)Also, reading the other one helped my brain to adjust. I guess the Doctor understands now, though the memory seems to be slipping away from Ianto as he wakes - better that way, he's where he belongs, with Jack.
Time Lord but not - for now. Guess it's not time yet.
Still intriguing =)
