Author’s Note: The remaining pieces of this story are going up tonight, because, well, otherwise they will never go up. RL is tracking me down and making me pay. There may be a sequel, but I'm not sure. I also may play around in this 'verse for a while. I have some ideas. That being said, let me know what you think so I know if it is worth continuing! :)
The Doctor poked his head out of the TARDIS and looked around, eagerly smiling. His face fell as he recognized the man running towards him. Still, this time he waited patiently for the very excitable Captain to catch up.
“Doctor! We needed you! Where were you? The 456–“
“You’re welcome.” He grinned, gave a little wave, and stepped back into the TARDIS.
Jack just stood, gawking, a confused grimace stuck to his face.
----------
Jack looked skeptically hopeful.
The man laughed and adjusted his buttonhole. “I believe you. It is entirely too devastating to be improbable.”
Jack looked at him curiously, awaiting further explanation. The man’s brown eyes stared at him in thought for a moment and then he smiled sadly.
“Oh, Jack. He who lives more lives than one, more deaths than one must die.”
----------
Novice Hame had been changed by The Face of Boe, and not simply because he had saved her life (as if her life were something important, something of value, something worth saving).
I sought forgiveness for so many years under his guidance.
It went even deeper than that. Her Lord had provided her life with meaning. He had given her a purpose, a focus. She would do anything to serve him, to protect him, to save him.
As she busied herself about the room, preparing his necessities, he spoke to her.
“Always taking care of me, Novice Hame. For centuries, for millennia, in all the shells of the universe. My anchor will finally outlive me.” He chuckled.
She smiled indulgently, even though she had no idea what he was talking about.
-----------
His newest companion looked at him, disbelief widening her eyes. He loved this part.
“Cat people, really? Sometime in the future, there will be cat people? Cat nuns?”
The Doctor nodded, smiling.
“And there is a man who lived a million billion years. Or, close enough. Well, he’s just a face now….”
“A face? Just a face? Nothing else?”
“And an anchor. Or maybe it was a tether.”
The girl laughed almost hysterically.
“You’re having me on!”
“Not at all,” said The Doctor, breaking his reverie. “So! Where would you like to go?”
