Just a quick thought that struck me as I was on getting ready for work.

Why do biracial couples fare so terribly in the Whoniverse?

The first one I thought of was Martha and Tom. Why did she end up marrying Mickey when she was engaged to Tom? Huh.

Which obviously leads me to think of Rose and Mickey. That didn't work out, now did it?

And Martha's dad with his new girlfriend; that never pans out.

Oh! And Donna with her conniving fiancé. Poor Donna.

Torchwood takes it a step further.

First, we have Ianto and Lisa. Yep. That goes smashingly, doesn't it?

Then, as a bit of a sidebar, Beth and Mike. Stabbity-stab.

I know it's probably, ya know, not intentional. Right? But it seems so odd. What are your thoughts? Is there a successful biracial couple anywhere in the Whoniverse?

Uhhh, let me think....

Nope, drawing a black so far!

Plus, if we look at other ethnicities (is that a word?) we have Tosh's unrequited love for Owen. And Tosh's 'relationship' with Mary, and Tosh and Tommy...

All in all, not a good track record.

I'm ashamed I didn't even think of Tosh! I just brushed it off as Tosh being unlucky in love...but you're so right.

I think I should write an essay....

Tosh is a walking Doomed Romance - poor girl never gets a break! It's like the writers couldn't come up with anything else to do with her! Sad when you consider what an inspiring character she could have been with a bit more effort on the part of the writers. All their effort seemed to go into exploring Gwen and Gwen's Life and Gwen's Relationships, and for all that, they failed to make her anything more than dull and boring - for me, anyway. Gwen was nothing I hadn't seen before, just written worse andmade less likeable. I found the snippets of Tosh's life much more interesting. I may not be a brain like Tosh, but I'm geeky and quiet and I've been overlooked or ignored most of my life, so I found her (and Ianto) much easier to identify with, and much more interesting as multi-layered characters.

An essay could be interesting, plus it would give you a good excuse to watch everything again in order to check your facts and look for any other examples ;)

Entertaining and well-timed maybe, but I really should pay more attention to what I'm typing. I swear I do know how to spell - most days...

Today is apparently NOT one of those days.

Did you get the other photos? I think I sent 5 by separate emails. Seems sending more than one at once doesn't work!

I agree with you both... I don't think it was necessarily "intentional" but.. thats like saying that people don't automatically shy a bit away from other races. I know where I'm from, the "bad part of town" is full of blacks, puerto ricans, vietnamese... etc. not alot of "whites/americans" Thus, in my area of life, people tend to be a bit more... twitchy around them. Even if its not expressly racist... it happens naturally. We as humans are always always goign to treat someone who's different.. different. Even if its in the opposite direction... if one gets a bit too friendly or whatever. American's especially... I hate to say it.

Now, like my subject says, I'm not racist... One of my closest friends is black, my boss is Brazilian, I've worked with a shitton of puerto ricans, my co-workers right now are Cape Verdean. *shrug* I could give a shit.. I really honeslty hate humanity as a whole, rather then particular aspects of it.

That said.. I DO agree with badly_knitted... I don't care about Gwen's "normal" relationship. If i wanted that I'd watch Friends or something. I care about the shy quite dorky ones. Cause again, I'm one of those. I was 22 before I had my first relationship. Hell, I was a virgin before that. *TMI? shrug* Its would be nice to see a show a bit more dedicated to the ones who AREN'T perfectly happy or perfectly beautiful (though I can safely say that John Barrowman and Gareth David Lloyd are two of the most beautiful people ever, GDL especially is not conventional. Really, neither is JB. You don't see them all over magazines *sad* or whatever. They are no Matt Damon *who is also hot* or whoever's gracing te cover of pop magazines.)

Oi, this is turning into a novel. I think that yes, an essay would be lovely, if I could help. :)

Ok. I should probably stop typing now, even if I have LOTS more to say. *sighs* I talk too much.

I don't think it's intentional either. I think it's more of a reflection of the fact that only a very tiny privileged few are allowed to be happy especially in Torchwood while everyone else has to be unhappy. There's Tosh and her relationships, but also Owen. Both his more serious relationships were with white women and they ended badly. Ianto and Lisa have a horrible end, but his relationship with Jack isn't exactly a happy fest either and we all know how that ends; Donna's first fiance was kind of an arse, but the guy she ends up with is also black and presumably they get to live happily ever after. Mickey and Martha ending up together instead of her with Tom I suspect owes more to the fact that they were the only NewWho characters left who weren't fixed up.

You're right; I also don't really think it's intentional. It just...stands out a bit.

I admit that I didn't get past season four of DW because...well, honestly, because I put my Netflix on hold. But this gives me a little bit of hope.

I also agree with the whole idea of relationships being particularly disastrous in the franchise overall. It doesn't help that everyone is so very much damaged.

Dude, I still get so bloody confused about the whole Martha/Tom thing...like, we can obv. guess and stuff about how she and Mickey got together, but I hate not knowing for definite! lol.

Now that you do mention it, you're right, none of them work out do they...

I know; it is heavily implied that she's engaged to Tom and then Tom magically transforms into Mickey. Yes, maybe that's it. :)

I know it's a strange thing to notice, though. This is what happens when I try to work with cognitive processes at 5am!
