lynnmyth23 for the ideas and edits and enthusiastic response. Any mistakes in here are my own! Feel free to point them out! Or, just point and laugh.
Author’s Note: Apparently I recover faster than I had expected. Two more chapters. Not sure how I feel about these, maybe because they are getting more serious? Also, I really truly love feedback, so please comment! It makes me write faster. Like how chanting "Doctor" brought the Doctor back, or clapping your hands if you believe in fairies helped Tinkerbell recover. True fact.
They lay awake, satisfied to kiss and hold each other for now, as the sweat cooled over their skin. Ianto nestled his head against Jack's chest, under his chin, and sighed.
"Hmmm?" Jack questioned, his breath slowly coming back to him.
"He said I was your anchor or your tether," Ianto murmured, eyes closed.
"Did he?"
"I'm not sure what he meant by that."
Finding it too difficult to shrug, Jack just wrapped an arm around Ianto, hummed a noncommittal reply, and closed his eyes, too.
--------------
It was their first argument. Well, their first since Ianto had come back, anyway. Jack had just returned after disappearing again and, while it had only been less than a day, it reawakened an unpleasantly anxious feeling.
"How long were you gone?" Ianto pressed, suspicion dripping from his words.
"Er," Jack raised his eyebrow and looked up at the clock. "Just under sixteen hours."
"Right, but how long were you gone?"
"Just under sixteen hours," Jack repeated, his voice growing terse.
"Where did you go?"
"The Doctor didn't come back, if that's what you mean. I had a problem that needed dealing with."
Ianto nodded and then paused.
"An alien problem?"
"Yes."
"And, what, the team wasn't good enough to take care of it? You had to go alone?"
Kara chose this time to clear her throat; a reminder that she was still in the room and that this was, in fact, her medical bay. When neither man acknowledged her, she gave up her examination of Jack (which, she knew, was just a formality, anyway) and huffed herself dramatically out of the room.
"It was something I had to deal with. On. My. Own," Jack managed through clenched teeth.
Ianto growled a curse in frustration.
"You can't always protect us, Jack. We’re going to die, whether you lock us up or not."
Jack stared at him for a moment, revealing with his eyes that Ianto had crossed a very distinct line (which Ianto was fairly positive had never before existed), and stormed off.
Ianto stood there for a moment, a fluttered panic in his stomach threatening to tear him to pieces. He heard the unmistakable sound of boots approaching again.
Jack stood above him and gripped the railing. "Tether," he snarled before retreating again.
-------------
"Eric?" Jack bellowed out for the fifth time and muttered something under his breath.
"Bloody Hell! What is it now?"
While he couldn't see him, he knew he had to be close by.
"Where the hell did Kara go?"
"She went to get us a coffee. You know, seeing as you broke the damn machine last week."
Jack laughed at that, so heartily that Eric popped out from behind the computer, looking a bit more than concerned.
"Oi, what is it? Everything all right?"
It was then that he noticed the man, the man who had been hanging around outside of the Hub, standing beside the Captain and looking a shade uncomfortable.
"We givin' tours to the locals now?"
Jack beamed brightly. It was, admittedly, disconcerting.
"Eric, I'd like you to meet Ianto."
Eric glanced from Arthur to Jack, and then did a double-take, just to be sure.
"Jack," he said, as if talking to a confused child, "this is Arthur. And he looks nothing like the picture of Ianto I've seen on your desk."
"You keep a picture of me on your desk?" Ianto blushed.
Jack grinned and nodded. "But it is Ianto. Trust me."
"Jack, Kara will be back any minute. Why don't you go sit patiently in the bay and she'll check you out when she gets here? I'll just go get Arthur here some tea, yeah?"
He was about to respond when the proximity alarm sounded and a voice rang out.
"Jack, you weren't here so I just got you a coffee, I hope that's - hey! Ooh! Are we recruiting him? He's cute!"
He just grinned and shrugged.
They only believed him (or at least gave up the argument) when Ianto had shown up the next day with a brand new coffee machine and made them each a drink.
"So we can keep him?" Kara asked excitedly.
-------------
Jack walked up behind him. He was trying so hard to be stealth that Ianto, no matter how upset he was, didn't have the heart to admit he heard. He gave a little jump when he felt the arm slink around his waist. That wasn't feigned; the gentle touch was, really, the last thing he had expected.
"Hi," Jack murmured as he leaned against him.
"Hi," Ianto replied, a bit cautiously.
"I'm sorry," he kissed his temple.
"Oh?"
------------
It took him a moment, already naked from the waist up, to realize that the body he was caressing with such burning need was, in fact, different.
Ianto's skin was a shade darker and his hair was blonde (though he had conscientiously offered, however shyly, to dye it dark), but those could easily be explained away.
When it came down to it, really, it was the fact that Ianto's hip bones were more pronounced that stopped him in his tracks.
"Jack," breathed Ianto, impatiently reaching up and grabbing for his belt.
"Shhh. I'm going to take my time...I have lots of new territory to explore," he grinned.
Ianto made a sound that was hard to distinguish (frustration? joy?) but did nothing to stop him.
-------------
As Jack positioned himself above, he looked directly into Ianto's eyes. He looked for so long that Ianto began to feel even more naked than he already was.
After a few burning moments, Jack finally leaned over and kissed him deeply (though not long enough for Ianto's liking.)
As he pulled away, he whispered into Ianto's ear.
"Anchor," he conceded.
