I was being a bit odd at work yesterday. I wrote something. And it's weird. And it isn't Torchwood-related at all. And I'm sharing it only because I can. *Shrug* But I made a pretty picture of myself too. That has to count for something, right? In any case, it's a glimpse into my head?

A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Woman

She wore time around her finger, wrapped up in a too-thick metal band meant for the heavy hands of a gentleman. One two three through twelve, all in perfectly etched Roman numerals. When she felt like paying attention, she would twist the ring in accordance with the hour displayed on her clock; she rarely felt like paying attention.

The hours passed blackgreysilver and she committed herself to time in a silent solitary ceremony at her desk. With this ring, I thee wed....

"Working?" His voice was deep and low behind her; soft, familiar, reassuring in its resonance, frightening in its timbre.

"At something." She smiled a half-moon as she sent 'Please please please' through space and time and unstable wires.

In her mind, the people she knows line up and her mother lavishes stories upon them; 'we called her the Mayor' and 'the psychologist was fascinated' and 'at three, she had kids as old as eleven following her every movement like a pack of hungry puppies.' And the people don't really care because they know this, because they're old enough to be her father or young enough to be her son, because she's a secret they can't bear to speak aloud.

Those strange, untrue relationships thin as gossamer and fragile as snowflakes. Sitting there, ring spinning on an axis-that-wasn't, she pretended to be fascinating. She slipped through tenses; past, present, future, and further forward and backward. She stared at music as it filled her mouth; dark chocolate cello, icicle piano, velvet cream violin.

But the ring was too tight - it choked off the oxygen, strangling it pale cold blue and numb. So she removed it, switched, divorced time.

Funny how the same finger could be different sizes from one hand to the next.

I don't think it was just a rambling at work, you let us have a snapshot of yourself, outside and inside and the ring had a really meaningful connection.
Hands may look similar but they are complete different(I had to enlarge my engagement ring when I got married ;))

thanks for sharing!
