Tenses

Past

The Captain’s jacket fluttered behind him as he stared out at the water.

A man approached, trying to retain an amount of dignity with his measured steps, and wrapped his arms around the still form.

“You’re easy enough to find,” Ianto murmured.

Jack grinned lopsidedly and returned the embrace, proffering a kiss to the younger man’s temple. They stood there, breathing each other in, grateful for a moment of simplicity in their hectic world.

The roof was deserted (as they often were) and so Ianto had no qualms about straining his neck and capturing Jack’s lips with his own. He placed his hand on the back of Jack's head to pull him closer and was obliged. Tongues battled for dominance, though neither man could name the victor.

Breaking away to fill his lungs back up with air, Jack smiled softly.

“I want you,” he growled.

Present

The Captain’s jacket flutters behind him as he stares out at the water.

A man approaches, not bothering to mask the eagerness in his hurried gait, and wraps his arms tightly around the still form.

“You’re here,” Ianto murmurs with something akin to awe.

Jack smiles and returns the embrace, proffering a kiss to the younger man’s temple. They stand there, breathing each other in, grateful for another moment of simplicity in their whirlwind lives.

The roof is deserted (as they always are) and so Ianto has no qualms about straining his neck and capturing Jack’s lips with his own. He places his hand on the back of Jack's head to pull him closer and Jack obliges. Tongues dance with a practiced ease, though neither man can tell who leads.

Breaking away to fill his lungs back up with air, Jack smiles softly.

Ianto wants to rage at the man for abandoning the team, for abandoning him, without a single word. But now isn’t the time and this certainly isn’t the place.

“Why did you come back?” he asks instead.

“I need you,” Jack answers, a hesitant smile tugging at his lips.

Future

The Captain’s jacket will flutter behind him when he goes to stare out at the water.

A man will approach, confidence in his stride, and will wrap his arms around the still form.

“You and rooftops,” Ianto will tease with affection in his voice.

Jack will smile and return the embrace, proffering a kiss to the younger man’s temple. They will stand there, breathing each other in, grateful for these moments of simplicity in their complicated existence.

The roof will be deserted (when isn’t it?), but it won’t matter; Ianto will have long overcome any qualms about straining his neck and capturing Jack’s lips with his own in public. He will place his hand on the back of Jack's head to pull him closer and Jack will oblige. Tongues will meet and caress, and neither man will know where one begins and the other ends.

Breaking away to fill his lungs back up with air, Jack will smile softly.

Ianto will return the smile and offer his own kiss to Jack’s temple. He will want to ask questions about what they are, what he means to the immortal enigma. But he won’t be able to form the words appropriately, and he'll think that this won’t be the right time.

“Why do you stay?” he will ask instead.

“I love you,” Jack will answer, knowing the question behind the other man’s eyes.

Conditional

The Captain’s jacket would have fluttered behind him as he stared out at the water, but the night was still.

A man would have approached, worry and need evident in his steps, and would have wrapped his arms around the still form.

“It’s done,” Ianto would have promised, his voice strong.

Jack would smile and return the embrace, proffering a kiss to the younger man’s temple. They would stand there, breathing each other in, grateful for all of the moments of simplicity they had been granted in their harried lifetime.

The roof would be deserted (the whole area would be deserted), but it wouldn’t matter; Ianto would have known that Jack needed comfort and reassurance, and would strain his neck and capture Jack’s lips with his own. He would have placed his hand on the back of Jack's head to pull him closer and Jack would oblige. Tongues would promise of hope and life, and neither man would know who needed the vows more.

Breaking away to fill his lungs back up with air, Jack would have smiled softly.

“I failed you,” Jack would have sobbed, but there was no one there to hear.

End
