Title: Linger, Part VI/X
Author[livejournal.com profile] sariagray
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Gwen, Rhys, Andy, OCs
Rating: PG
Word Count: 771
Spoilers: I spoil EVERYTHING. Which isn't much, actually.
Warnings: Nothing dodgy here. A little mushy, maybe?
Disclaimer: Not mine. Not even a little.
Beta: Thanks goes out to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted for the hard work and wonderful encouragement (especially the part about not listening to dumb people who don't know what they're doing. *Grin*) That said, any mistakes are my own. For anyone new, pointing them out is appreciated (and pointing and laughing is still allowed).
Author’s Note: First: Thank you for your patience. I basically scrapped a main central part of the plot. Killed it dead, I did. Because it was stupid. And I don't care if I just set myself up to be jossed, because, well, I already did, didn't I? In any case, I hope you enjoy. Thanks for the comments and support! :)

Part VI

"You want...us?" Andy whispered as he fidgeted with his hands, staring at some point beyond Jack’s head.
"I can see him!" Rhys blustered at the same time to anyone who would listen..
Ianto gave a little wave in Rhys's direction, begrudgingly admitting to himself that he was really beginning to enjoy popping out and surprising people. It was a rare occurrence; he hadn’t even dared to see Rhiannon like this, or else all of Wales would hear about her amazing brother come back from the dead.
"Yes," Jack answered Andy's query as curtly as possible. Ianto knew he hadn't yet warmed to the idea and had only given in because it was the best option that they had.
Even in full form, functioning as any normal human would, Ianto couldn't do as much as he used to. Every time he left the office he risked getting caught, which was difficult to explain, his being officially dead and all. And even still, three members were never enough.
Jack had grown to trust Rhys and the man had solidness to his character that would benefit Torchwood; Jack recognized it. Andy was more of a wildcard, but since Lois had firmly refused working for Torchwood, who else did they have? He knew Jack had tried to bring Martha on, but no amount of persuasion could budge her from UNIT. Ianto was secretly grateful; it meant that they could maintain a reliable, trustworthy liaison within that organization.
That still left Andy, who was now gaping openly at them. Rhys had given a more dignified nod to the request (most likely prepped by Gwen, who had apparently neglected to tell her husband that Ianto was now…tangible. He was tempted to put her on decaf for that).
     Calm.
     "You're scaring him."
Jack gave an imperceptible nod and turned back to Andy, his voice softening. "I think you would be useful," he said, weighing his words with extreme care. "Will you come?"
The soothing tone of Jack's voice calmed the PC and he regained his composure.
     "Yes. It's an honor."
Gwen bit down on a relieved giggle and Ianto tried to smile welcomingly without succumbing to laughter. It didn't work so well.
"Anyone for coffee?" he hazarded instead.

--------

Ianto retreated into the kitchenette after receiving four simultaneous eager nods. A few moments later, Jack approached and wrapped himself around Ianto’s back as he ground a great deal of coffee. Jack rested his chin on Ianto’s shoulder, peering over to watch his every movement. Ianto secretly hoped he was picking up pointers.
“You are staying, right?” Jack murmured into his ear.
“No, Jack. I thought I’d go off and open up a nice little café in Swansea.” He paused, and smiled at Jack's terrified expression. “Of course I’m staying.”
“I just wasn’t sure…I didn’t know if you…wanted this. I don’t want you to feel trapped here.” The anxiety in Jack’s voice didn’t begin to cover it. The man radiated apprehension.
“I was sent to guard you.”
     “Right.”
     Comfort.
     Hope.
     Loyalty.
     Forever.
“Even if I wasn’t, I’d stay. We both know I’m notoriously bad at obeying the Watchers’ orders.”

“We never discussed the consequences…” Jack started.
     Peace.
     Calm.

Ianto finally set the machine to brewing and turned around in Jack’s embrace. He kissed him softly before smiling, his own forehead resting against Jack’s.
     “Consequences be damned.”

------

Appearing before the Council was always difficult for Fremenka. She was a nervous thing, focused on the possibilities of failure rather than the guarantees of success. Garunsal understood this and so did his best to ease her discomfort.
He had started by braiding her sunlit hair, softly kissing her golden, bare back in the process. She relaxed into his gentle touch and sighed. When he finished with the task, he guided her around to face him.
     Her sapphire eyes sparkled.
Like all of the Watchers, Garunsal was as a sculpture; marble skin, gemstone eyes, cascading hair. The Da’al were darkness and heat, a contrast to the cool light of the Ara. The Priestess had confirmed that they were the perfect balance, and so they had wed beneath the triple moonrise.
Originally, they had been called by the Council for Union, the binding of the departed Guardian to a host couple. Fremenka had been terrified standing before the voice of Credu, Garunsal’s gentle hand on her back the only thing that kept her from fleeing. Now, they had to make a report.
“Are you ready, Pet?” he whispered.
She paused and then nodded, watching him as he grabbed his staff.

*big squishing hug*

I love how out of his depth Andy is and Rhys' reaction to seeing Ianto makes me giggle - as does Ianto's little wave!

It's going to be fun seeing how they deal with Ianto being alive and human when they can't really parade him around Cardiff. Seems something will need to be done about his resurrected existence, but I can't imagine what =S

Still fascinated by the aliens who choose guardians for certain people from the deceased. Wondering why they do it and how they will react when they find Ianto has disobeyed orders and become... whole again. It's all very mysterious =)

Oh, something will be done. *Evil laughter* No, no, it won't be that bad, I swear.

And they know; those Watchers are up to somethin'. :)

Thanks!
